SJ Compound
This house was designed on a virgin site for a middle-aged couple downsizing from their 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house. Their 4 children are grown and live away from the house. Change in the family dynamics include adult children living in a 15 mile range of the parents with socializing and gathering occurring on a regular basis versus the annual holiday gatherings typical of families that live further apart. Therefore, public gathering spaces for the family to congregate inside and outside the house are important. The compound developed in three phases: first the house was sited adjacent to a newly created garden space carved into the wooded area. The second phase placed a garage and storage area in a formal arrangement with the house. The third phase, a pool, pool house and fence, shifted the emphasis of the original house from the garden to the entry courtyard. This shift provides for multiple types of gathering spaces for the family. On a regular basis 6 adults and 5 grandchildren gather on the premises for family events, dinner and swimming. SJ House This 2000 sf residence sits on a 4 acre rural site in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A private garden was carved into the existing wooded area with the house, a long bar building, acting as an enclosure to that space. The house was placed to take advantage of solar orientation and the newly created private garden. The internal entry sequence of the house terminates with the most public space, the living room that acts as a pavilion in the garden. | |||||
