SJ Garage + Workshop Garage + Workshop, a 2-story vernacular structure, utilizes a combination of translucent polycarbonate panels and transparent windows to create specific connections between the interior and its context, a heavily wooded rural landscape. This 1200 square foot, 2-story vernacular structure draws inspiration from the vernacular farm buildings nearby. It is framed using typical 2x construction and clad with a low-maintenance and inexpensive materials. The western elevation, which backs onto woods, is clad with a combination of translucent polycarbonate panels and clear operable windows. Aside from bringing in a generous amount of light into the space, this wall system phenomenologically connects the interior with the exterior. From the inside, the wooded landscape is projected and flattened onto this surface and simultaneously one experiences both the materiality of the panels and the textures and colors of nature. Clear apertures, juxtaposed in the panels, create a plane within this plane that is vivid and has depth. From the outside, the panels silhouette the structure and users, simultaneously exposing the section and purpose of the building. This project reasserts the values inherent in humble vernacular outbuildings that are testaments to the knowledge derived from generations of building upon the land. | ||||||
