    AK House

Overview:

This 900 square foot addition and renovation to a traditional 1910 four-over-four house introduces a series of thickened-walls as a means of providing much needed storage and a method to spatially organize the interior. The first floor is longitudinally structured by a thickened-wall that opens the house visually from front to rear. This wall can be transversely penetrated at key programmatic places and provides storage specific to adjacent spaces. Another storage wall also organizes and visually opens the second floor from front to rear. The ends on this axis are terminated with a mirror in the children’s bathroom at the front of the house and a window in the master bedroom towards the rear. This wall also separates the upper hallway from the master bathroom and utility room while defining the threshold between the master bedroom and the children’s bedrooms. Strategically placed sliding doors allow for the personalization of spaces including dressing areas and master bedroom entrance. On the exterior, the addition blends with the original house, complimenting the existing material palette and massing. A simple ribbon of vertical T&G siding wraps the addition on the first floor and becomes the railing for the second floor balcony. This balcony, accessible from the master bedroom, is connected to the lower terrace with an open metal stair. Intervention:
